$800 billion in tax revenue in the fiscal cliff negotiations. president obama has said there will be no deal unless taxes are raised on the wealthiest americ americans. but staunch conservatives don't want any kind of new taxes. that's where speaker boehner's job gets really tough. on piers morgan tonight newt gingrich said if all else fails, go over the cliff. >> i think that no deal is better than a bad deal. i think going off this cliff is less dangerous than letting things build up for a year or two years to an even bigger cliff. i think that the president clearly has staked out a position of nonseriousness. and i think that it's very difficult for the house republicans right now to find any practical way to get his attention. so, he just won an election. he is feeling very good about himself. he is posturing brilliantly, putting the republicans in a corner. they need to relax. they don't have an election until november 2014. >> senior congressional correspondent dana bash joins me now. dana, can we expect fire woworkt the meeting this morning? >> reporter: possibly

, 27 days until the fiscal cliff. and i know you know that already, but guess what, folks? the deadline for congress and the white house to act, to stop the tax increase and punishing spending cuts, that deadline is coming up quicker than you may realize because did you know, congress plans to end its current session on december 21st? check your calendar as we did today. that's two weeks from friday. that means that under congressional rules any agreement, any legislation to fix this whole mess would have to be filed here by december 28th. here's the kicker. the president currently plans to leave town the day before that, on the 17th of this month. so the yearly obama trip to hawaii is set to start a week from next monday. you feel me here? see where i'm going? the window closing faster than folks think. what are our decisionmakers doing right now? among other things they are apparently sending signals through the media. republicans saying time to get moving. the president saying there is a deal to be had fairly quickly if the republicans come around to raising taxes on the wealthy. let

's plan to avert the fiscal cliff. guess what, the white house rejected it, calling the gop proposal unbalanced and not serious. translation? no tax hikes on the wealthy so democrats said forget about it. we thought you should take a look. it totals $2.2 trillion in deficit reduction over ten years. the part that stood out to us was $600 billion in proposed savings in medicare reforms. how? in part by raising the age of eligibility to 65 to maybe 67. turning down the gop proposal, dan pfieffer said, quote, it provides no details on which deductions they would eliminate, which loopholes they will close or which medicare savings they would achieve." let's head now to the white house and dan lothian. the white house will not offer a counter proposal, right? what's going on here? >> reporter: well, you know, i think the white house is digging in. the president said early on in this process that he would only sit down and really move forward, negotiate on this in any meaningful way if the tax hikes for the wealthy expired. and republicans have been pushing back on that -- tax breaks rathe

, a lot of news to get to on this monday. first, of course, talks over the fiscal cliff. they are going nowhere fast. democrats, they're basically telling republicans, hey, ball's in your court. we'll take you live to the white house for that. also, as the city grieves over an nfl player's tragic breaking point, new debates today about gun control and domestic violence. you'll hear both. but first, the u.s. has long believed syria has a huge stockpile of chemical weapons. now new concerns that chemical arsenal is on the move. secretary of state hillary clinton today issuing another stern warning against syria, using these weapons. the syrian foreign ministry quick to respond here saying it would not use chemical weapons against its people if it had any, but this announcement as turkey is sending warplanes to its border with syria after the syrian military bombed a nearby town of ras al-ain. you can hear that and see the smoke. this is the turkish side of the border. this is fueling more fears that more of syria's violence will spill into its neighbor to the north, being turkey. security

washington bickers over the fiscal cliff and who's going to pay more in taxes, in great britain, lawmakers are telling some american companies it is time to start paying their fair share there in the uk. even throwing around terms such as shame, outrageous when talking about it. executives from google, amazon, and starbucks all appeared before a parliamentary committee looking into how international companies minimize the tax they pay in the uk. richard quest is in london to explain it all. now, richard, not necessarily talking about tax evasion here. it's more like avoidance, minimization, what's the concern? >> reporter: that's exactly the point. the companies are not breaking the law, not doing anything wrong. the accounts committee described their actions as immoral claiming they have r. so arranging their tax affairs so as to pay no tax in the country where the money is earned. this applies to google, which uses ireland, applies to amazon, on the continent, and it applies to starbucks in amsterdam. what we learned is how these companies arrange their affairs. so even though the latte
